Workplace Responsibilities
Software teams operate according to a set of standard practices. Most software teams are part of a bigger company, which also has standard work practices. codeX is designed to create a similar environment that you will eventually be working at, once you graduate.
When a company interviews a candidate for a position, they phone codeX and any other previous employers for a reference - mostly to find out how responsible you are.
Standard Practices
- Punctuality
- Communication
- Reliability
- Technical Skills
Reliability and Communication are the key aspects that a company cares about, when considering hiring a new team member.
Punctuality
Punctuality is looked at in a number of ways
- Arriving at work on time consistently
- Arriving at work in time to be prepared for any meetings
- Arriving at meetings at the time that they start
- Leaving work at the expected time
Reliability
Companies can’t afford to employ people who are not reliable. Reliability is looked at in the following terms
- How often you are late
- How often you are absent
- When and how you communicate if you are late / not able to make it to work
- Whether you are late for meetings
- Whether you forget important information
- Whether you do not meet your work commitments, and how you communicate this
Communication
Communication is also considered in a number of ways
- How you communicate in your teams
- How you communicated during meetings
- How you communicate during breaks, e.g. coffee breaks, lunch etc.
- When you use your cell phone
Technical Skills & Learning
Technical skill needs vary from company to company. The codeX technical curriculum provides a solid foundation in web development, and a reasonable foundation for many other software roles. Software team members expect to grow their technical skills while working on teams, by taking on increasingly difficult tasks.
- How well you plan your work
- How well you plan your learning
- How quickly you learn
- How much time you spend learning
- How comfortable you are to communicate when you are stuck
- How long you remain stuck without sharing your approach to get unstuck (longer has a negative impact on the business: problems must be solved quickly).
codeX provides a learning environment that is designed to help you develop strong positive workplace habits. Please make sure that we are able to provide a good reference for you for any of the above.
Please read the Employer Reference Questions for a list of typical questions we get on reference calls.
